49ft 22 TON Robert Clark Cutter steel hull fantastic project in progress
Beautifully built corten steel hand rolled, like only the dutch know how using the finest sheet metal produced of its era, which makes for a beautiful wine glass shaped hull with an encapsulated lead keel. Seaswallow was built in 1954 in the Van Dam Yard in Holland for the owner of a stainless steel factory, consequently there are many stainless steel fittings for the mast and rigging.
Length 49’, beam 11’ 8”, draft 6’ 6”, waterline length 38’
Hull thickness 6mm in keel area to 4mm topsides. 68’ hollow spruce keel stepped mast and 22’ square boxed boom all original.
Stripped back to bare hull. Temporary ply covered deck for working on.
Grit blasted hull inside and out. Epoxy painted inside and out. Foam spray to internal and filled and faired to the outside of the hull.
New engine (2lt BMC naturally aspirated diesel engine) fitted into new position, central low down in saloon, and prop shaft new position in front of rudder where the hull was redesigned to take a central propeller and shaft. New cutlass bearing and deep sea seal with universal coupling on gear box (gear box 3 to 1 Hurth).
Modified deck and raised coachroof to make more room down below and raised floor area. New stainless steel diesel main tank and diesel day tank. New polypropylene fresh water tanks and new black tank all designed to fit into the hull spaces. New hot water calorifier. Initial wiring installed using batt finest tinned cables and plumbing commenced.
Bulkheads fitted to create space for, rear pilot berth, day heads in saloon, longitudinal galley, u-shaped saloon, second heads/shower midship with bunks opposite and forward double cabin. Standing headroom throughout.
Original bronze winches non self tailing, original teak decking removed and stored in boat for refurb. New chain plates welded into hull. Tiller or wheel steering.
Sitting in own cradle. 100m of half inch chain. Bowthruster tunnel built ready.
On hardstanding in Kent for viewing.
