Mary Bryant is one of the best-known gaff-rigged schooners in British waters.
She was built in Fowey, Cornwall, during 1980-81.
Her accommodation offers: 1 double berth and six single berths all 6ft 6ins in length. Generous headroom throughout of 6ft 6ins.
The first owner, Mike Johnson, was closely involved in her building her and recorded this in a series of articles in the Practice Boat Owner.
Two articles written about her which appeared in the Yachting Monthly publication. When a previous owner on her shake-down trip after buying the Mary Bryant was to Iceland and back!.
Mary Bryant has made at least six Atlantic crossings and she has taken part in classic regattas from the Caribbean up to Nova Scotia.
Present owners bought the Mary Bryant in December 2009 and brought her round to the East Coast in May 2010. We sailed her to Norway in the summer of 2010 and in 2011 we sailed to the West Coast of Scotland via the Caledonian Canal. She spent the winter in Oban and in 2012 she explored the Hebrides extensively and then sailed back to the East Coast via the Irish Sea and the Channel, through some heavy weather.
In subsequent years she has sailed extensively on the East Coast including visiting Whitby and many other ports. Her home swinging mooring is at Wrabness on the River Stour and is laid up at Downs Road Boatyard in Maldon during the winter.
Mary Bryant is very generous in many ways, headroom throughout, the size of berths, wide side decks. Beautiful traditional rig. A real splendid ship, kept in very order well maintained order and in commission, "Ready to Go"
Last survey was undertaken in 2009 all defects have been attended to.

Yanmar 55 HP 4 cylinder diesel installed under a varnished mahogany, sound-proofed engine box in mid cabin. New in 2002. Fitted with Separ Duplex Pre-Filter system (enables fuel supply to be switched through second filter whilst engine is running, so that first filter can be replaced whilst running,( never needed to be used). . Halyard Marine thrust bearing. exhaust system new 2002.
Annual check over the engine, serviced and winterised by TSRigging Ltd Downs Road Boatyard, Maldon, Essex.
Engine sited amidships in mid cabin. lift of hatch above, with 360 degree full access via removal of sound proofed engine box. Instrument panel mounted to bulkhead to main cabin. Fuel tanks with berths over.
40 gallon fuel in 2 inter-connecting steel tanks starboard amidships. Flexi-water tanks (100 gallons) to port and starboard under settee berths in main cabin. Hot and cold pressurised water system to mid-cabin basin and shower head, to fore cabin basin and galley area.
Three 12 volt batteries are securely installed beneath the forward cabin berth to port, two of which are domestic and one dedicated to the engine.
Mary Bryant was built to Murray Peterson’s Coaster 3 design, one of five known of. She is long keel with a clipper bow and full, rounded counter stern.
Hull is carvel planked in Iroko on Oak (alternate grown ribs to a laminated one, all copper fastenings and bronze straps. She has a 4tons iron ballast keel held in place with Iron keel bolts ( last drawn in 2009) 100kgs internal ballast of lead ingots.
Her construction was recorded in a series of articles and photographs in the Practical Boat Owner Magazine (May, September, October, November 1981 and March 1982). They are a testament to her massive construction.
Mary Bryant she has oak floors and a teak laid over marine ply deck, with a shallow step amidships. She has extremely wide flat side decks and an open aft spacious cock-pit with wheel steering , set on an Edson worm gear system to the rudder head.
On Deck - Self draining open aft cockpit, wheel steering ( gears were overhauled in 2017). Bronze deck fittings, a bronze stem head fitting. Aft and forward coach roofs of Iroko, epoxy sheathed and painted ( cream) . Two sliding hatches to companion steps in both main and forward cabin, plus a shallow, hinged, lift-off hatch amidships over the engine compartment. Painted iroko coamings with rectangular bronze framed fixed windows and opening ports. Varnished sliding hatches on both coach-roofs. Shallow bulwarks all around on wooden stanchion posts with varnished capping rails. Cream paint inside of capping and coach roofs.

Main Cabin - Companionway ladder from cockpit into main saloon. Port side a wet locker, on both sides is the galley facilities: to port is the full size stainless steel sink and drainer. Work surface with 12 volt fridge under, ample stowage under the side decks, an extensive rack of storage jars. To starboard is a gimballed gas Smev 2 burner hob,oven and grill, extensive work surface and more storage.

Partial bulkheads from galley into the saloon: full sized upholstery covered settee berths. An extra pilot berth up behind port side settee. A centreline drop leaf varnished wooden dining table between. All interior wooden surfaces in main cabin varnished with clear satin finish. Solid fuel stove against forward bulkhead.
2 x plastic water tanks are sited under the settees. Hot water system from both engine and an electric calorifier.
Port side door through to Mid Cabin - Full size berth to port plus another over and across the soundproofed engine box, a free standing wash basin facility with a shower head on hose, a cabinet below stands just before the door through to the "Heads". A Jack and Jill heads compartment with Lavac sea toilet and wash basin. Full head room, 2nd doorway enter forward into the fore cabin.
Fore Cabin – Two very large V berths. Full head room. Beautifully varnished ship’s sides remain exposed. Starboard berth opens to small double. The fore peak used for stowage. Companionway ladder from fore deck.

The vessel is decommissioned for the Winter and she has an overall Winter cover to protect her from the elements. All sails are removed for the Winter, checked over and cleaned.
Winter 2018 Her masts wee removed and re-varnished all the rigging was checked over and replaced where necessary. All the wooden blocks were re-varnished.
